The Specialized Sequoia that I picked up is now clean and safe too ride. I had to replace the tubes and tires. The old tires were dry rotting and starting crumbling when I started changing the tubes. The tires were mismatched sizes so up upsized them both to 28mm. I also had to clean and tune the brakes. The drive train was pretty good to start. The cassette looked almost new, and the derailleur is perfectly straight. I did have to adjust the rear derailleur just a bit. I swapped out the nylon bear trap pedals with an old pair of aluminum flats. I also swapped the original frayed foam saddle for an inexpensive short-nosed honeycomb saddle that I found on AliExpress. The handlebars were missing one end cap so I added a mirror. The bike is in good condition overall.
I still have a few things to do. The bike does not have any reflectors so I will do my usual retro-reflective tape for the front and rear deflectors. The reflectors are necessary to make the bike street legal here in Nevada (like most states), but I will hold off on this until I address all of the scratches on the frame. I have not done anything with the handlebar tape yet. I am not sure if I want to stay with black or change it up with a pop of color. I do like the the existing cloth wrap.
With just a bit more work, I will be ready to take it on a longer ride - if only temp was not over 110°F. I have ridden it up and down the street a few times just to make sure everything is working.
